With sprite and fries, I get ready to read another novel in a genre that has caught fire - especially in India -i.e., the fantasy/mythology/action. However, what strikes me first; much before the presumptuous utopian Kishkindha is the way the author slays all the clichés just like the way Hanuman slays the dark forces.Can we have a hero who is not born with a million bottles of confidence and arrogance?
Can we have a heroine that requires no saving?
Can the victim of our actions not be a human but nature (without it being preachy)?
Could our 'villains' have had their days of glory?
Moreover, can our hero be anything but the 'chosen one'?
For days and nights, we have heard stories about the brave one, the just one, the powerful one - but never have we paused to assessed what would those stories have been if certain allies had not been there. Allies who deserved a story of their own.
What the Art Museum defines as an 'ally' in San Francisco, is breathed into a surprisingly believable hero in the land of Kishkindha. You may be taken aback by the sudden influx of foreign words beginning with the Kishkindha - at first, but the joy of reading Saraswati's Intelligence is that one does not need to grasp the word. One does not need to know which rule started first. One does not even need to recollect the verbatim histories and philosophies etched out in the book to understand what Saraswati's Intelligence is all about.
I will not claim to get Saraswati's Intelligence at the snap of the fingers because initially I was irritated at the thought that how could a bleeding injury be a crime? Well until I paused to think, to being slightly horrified that a nineteen-year-old feels bloodshed too common for it to be singled out as a threat (forget about crime).
In an age where some are demanding exclusivity, barraging mother earth, spilling blood like cheap water and where pennies mean more than life; Saraswati's Intelligence is a refreshing change.
The magic lies that you embark the journey of understanding non-violence with Hanuman. Never before have I been so connected with Hanuman, in spite of having uttered his name several times in prayers. Never before have I seen Hanuman more clearly, in spite of having his figurine sit at my temple even before I was before.
This Hanuman is not an authoritative figure, or the foolish child often represented in the media. His childlike innocence touches your heart when you see it his negligence that threatens his emotional vulnerability. This Hanuman resonates his strength by bleeding compassion for those who attack senselessly (ah, attacking senselessly for immense hunger - doesn't that sound a lot like someone we know?).
From Tara to Vaishnavi, Vishwamitra to Vali (and a surprise visit from Ganapati); the author realizes the world of Gods by making them human.
Moreover, because they have a touch of 'Godliness' in them; each woman is an independent character who exists for reasons apart from standing consort to her paired partner, Hanuman's actions teaches you more philosophy than Vishwamitra's words, we have too strong a resemblance to the scrawny tailless creatures.
Saraswati's Intelligence is not an anthropomorphic tale of monkeys and elephants. It certainly isn't about good versus evil.
It is just about a growing man realizing that righteousness can never be taught or gained - it can be executed and achieved.
The benefit of his 'righteousness'? It is not about saving a person or a community - it is about preserving the land we stand on.
You are welcome to disagree or even derive a different understanding than mine from this book. Because Saraswati's Intelligence is like a maze wherein every puzzle will lead you to a meaning of your own.

The beauty of any well-written fiction, especially one based on our civilizational epics, is that they bring a wonderfully untouched perspective to the fore. When fiction is done right, the impact of the book lasts a lot longer than the book itself. Long after one is done reading, when the details of the characters and settings begin to fade away from one’s memory, that melancholic rumination remains which takes us deeper into understanding our epics beyond stories, beyond words and beyond our comprehension. This book is one such.
The powerful character of Hanuman, touches some raw strings in one's heart that one didn't even realize existed. It creates a hunger to learn more, to know more. It revives a desire to read the epics once again, to understand the knowledge our ancestors have left for us.
This is the power of this stimulating narration, of this glorious storytelling, that it encourages you to move further in your understanding of the Brahmanda, of Dharma and pulls you back to your roots in ways you didn't think was possible. In a way, it helps clear out the cloud created by dogmatic secular teaching which has trained our minds to believe that there is nothing in these epics except stories, something our hearts never really accepted. Through this book, Prof Juluri reveals that there is so much more, if one just tried to look.
Thank you Vamsee Juluri for revealing Saraswati's intelligence to us. I am forever indebted. Can’t wait to read the remaining books of the series!
Perhaps like the Kishkindans, we can all start to consider that non violent choices in every aspect of life lead us to a better solution.
This tale is a springboard for the imagination to conjure viable ahimsic life choices.
Interesting way to present Dharma. Character depiction is wonderful. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Excellent narration, very gripping and simply beautiful. Merging evolution and mythology with logical arguments and entertaining the reader equally with a simple storyline

Like the many other books inspired by Sanatan Dharma's kathas this book takes you on an amazing adventure. In a fictional take on Hanuman's balyakal, Saraswati's Intelligence offers both surprises and familiarity. The one thing I liked most about this book is its use of Sanskrit nontranslatables. The one thing I was not much enthused about its excessive insistence on ahimsa (defeat not destroy). Lets not forget that Prithiviraj Chauhan was probably under similar persuasions and he brought death, ruin and misery to his subjects (an extreme adharmic act).
